[TechRepublic] Get some JSON in your database

Editor's note
JavaScript is forever increasing its reach beyond the browser. V8 and node.js show how the language can be used to create servers with that elusive factor called "web scale", and plenty of toolkits and languages have JavaScript bindings now. There are even desktop environments written in JavaScript. And now, one of the most helpful offshoots of JavaScript, JSON, will soon have its support increased in an upcoming release of PostgreSQL. I think it is a fine idea to have JSON support baked into databases themselves, as it should remove some of the boilerplating that occurs to feed JavaScript appropriate JSON. And since the database will do type checking, as databases are built to do, it will be possible to have strongly typed JSON, should you want it. It'll be the best of both worlds. --Chris
